Your Restaurant's Website May Be Invisible to AI Search
When a customer asks ChatGPT "what's a good burger place near me?" the AI looks for readable, well-structured web pages to cite. If your restaurant's website relies heavily on JavaScript to render content, AI crawlers may see an empty page instead of your menu, hours, and location.
This is a growing problem as more customers shift from Google keyword searches to AI conversations. The good news: the fixes are straightforward, and most of your competitors have not done them yet.
Why chain restaurant websites struggle with AI visibility
Large chain restaurants tend to build JavaScript-heavy websites. These sites look great in a browser, but AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot often see an empty HTML shell. The menu, locations, and hours are loaded dynamically, and crawlers do not execute JavaScript the way browsers do.
Independent restaurants tend to use simpler platforms (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix) that produce crawlable HTML by default. This gives them an advantage in AI search that they usually do not even know they have.
The 5 things to fix (in priority order)
Add Restaurant or LocalBusiness schema. This is a JSON-LD block telling AI systems "I am a restaurant, here is my address, hours, and cuisine type." Most restaurant websites do not have this. Google's documentation on structured data explains the format.
Add FAQPage schema. This is the highest-leverage type for AI citations. Think about the questions customers ask: vegetarian options? Open on Mondays? Reservations? Each one becomes a Question/Answer pair that AI can cite directly. See Google's FAQPage schema guide.
Check your robots.txt. Make sure you are not blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. Many sites block AI crawlers accidentally through security plugins or CMS defaults. You can check yours at
yourdomain.com/robots.txt.Have a sitemap. WordPress users: install Yoast or Rank Math. Squarespace and Wix generate sitemaps automatically. Submit it in Google Search Console.
Create an llms.txt file. A plain text file telling AI crawlers what your business is and which pages matter most. Takes 10 minutes. Learn more at llmstxt.org.
The good news
For independent food businesses, all five fixes are either free or cost a few hours of time. You do not need a developer. You do not need a redesign. You need structured data, crawlable HTML, and FAQ answers.
The shift from keyword search to AI search is an opportunity for small operators who move quickly.
